Art in Nature Therapy
Creating an group art piece taking turns creating a continuous contour line on separate pieces of watercolor paper taped together, then choosing a piece of the mosaic to create within the lines individually, attempting to keep the integrity of the line we created. This was done using simple materials that can be easily carried in a backpack. Processed the experience of creating together, including identifying metaphors discovered within group and individual process, such as difficulty of keeping the integrity of the original group line while creating individual art, communication dynamics while drawing one line together, choosing a piece to create, and piecing it back together to become a whole piece at the end. Discussed ways that I have discovered to bring/carry and use art materials easily while meeting with folks in nature. All participants shared a variety of their own ideas for incorporating art into wilderness/nature based sessions, including use of natural materials/found natural objects as both art tools and as materials to incorporate into a natural art piece. Also brought up Andy Goldsworthy’s work and how he incorporates the concepts of transience/ leave no trace with his art Method -Connected small pieces of watercolor paper together, mosaic style, with tape. -Had participants take turns creating a continuous line with black sharpie on the entire connected piece. Participants started drawing any type of free form line, then the person next to them in the group would direct them to stop and would pick up creating the line where that person left off. Continued until everyone had a turn. -Participants were then invited to choose one piece of paper within the whole to take and use to create their own individual pieces, using provided art materials as well as any natural elements available on the ground. Participants were asked to do their best to keep the integrity of the continuous line on their paper while creating. -Participants were invited to come together and place their individual pieces back together into one whole piece, doing their best to reconnect the original continuous line of the group. -Participants were given time to process the entire experience through group ‘popcorn’ dialogue -Participants were given opportunity to take individual pieces home with them after taking a photo of the whole piece |
